Your Home

You can do so much to help the environment in your own home!!!

Your Home

  • De-toxify your house –  limit use of harmful chemicals and pesticides etc link www.meetthepollutants.com
  • Buy ecofriendly detergents – look for ‘NP’ (No Phosphorus) laundry soap and ‘grey water safe’ products
  • Buy organic meat and vegetables – if the farmers don’t use harmful pesticides and fertilizers then there is a better outcome for the environment (and for you)
  • Much more water is used to raise animals for consumption than the equivalent calories of vegetables  – reducing the amount of meat we eat can have a big impact on how much water is extracted from creeks adjacent to our farms
  • We should aim to limit food waste in general – better for the wallet / better for the environment
  • Start looking after some house plants – the right plants can oxygenate your bedroom while you are sleeping giving you a better rest
  • The more synthetic clothes we buy the more microplastic is released during washing clogging up our creeks – choose natural fibres where you can
  • Careful what you flush – those ‘flushable’ wet wipes clog our sewerage system
  • Invest in water saving fixtures

Your Local Creek

Make everyone gush over your local creak

Your Local Creek

Your Garden

Your garden is the perfect place to start going green

Your Garden

  • Wash the car on the lawn – put those nutrients in the soap to good use
  • Plant drought tolerant gardens – your local nursery can help select the best species and use mulch to help retain soil moisture
  • Put your food scraps in a compost bin and recycle the nutrients – this also increases the water retention of the garden
  • Be careful of using weed killer before predicted rain – any washoff can really harm the aquatic life in the creeks
  • Let the grey water from your washing machine irrigate your lawn and keep it green during water restrictions
  • Sweep your driveway instead of letting that dirt flow into the stormwater drain
  • Install a raingarden to filter the nutrients from your roof runoff
  • Dispose of chemicals (oils, paints and solvents) carefully
  • Install nest boxes for the local wildlife
  • Install a rainwater tank and have the water plumbed into the house or for irrigating the garden
  • Install a permeable driveway to allow water to seep away instead of flowing to the road

Your Street

You can do so much for your community

Your Street

  • Plant a tree on the footpath – better yet have a water wise tree installed
  • Pick up a piece of litter everyday
  • Clean up after your dogs – don’t let their waste contaminate our creeks
  • Get together with your neighbours and inspire them to act too
